On Page 95, the first eight panels represent eight different artists' depiction of Jesus: Michelangelo; Fra Angelico; the Master of Cefalu; Caravaggio; Rembrandt; El Greco; an unknown 17th century Ethiopian icon artist; and Gauguin. The ninth panel is an image by Richard Neave, used by the BBC in a documentary about the historical Jesus and widely described in news reports as a forensic reconstruction of what Jesus may have looked like. Mr. Neave, however, wished me to emphasize that it is not, in fact, a picture of Jesus, but simply of someone who lived roughly in Jesus’s time (give or take as much as a century), in what today is Israel/Palestine. (Paul, obviously, saw the news reports but didn't read the fine print.) Image © Richard Neave; reprinted with his kind permission. Panels ten and eleven are depictions of Jesus by Léon Augustin Lhermitte and Vermeer, respectively.

not seeing faces does not rule out particularity, just maybe requires a little more creativity to see the particular in voices, dress (for J, depiction of wounds_ etc
